STRAIN joint laboratory

The Clément Ader Institute benefits from a special knowledge in the fields of numerical modelling, the development of computational models with an experimental characterization approach on mechanical systems, multi-material materials. The ICA also has specific expertise in the field of spring elastic bonds. This expertise has been developed for several years in collaboration with CGR International, which is a global supplier of springs, metal parts and metalloplastics for the industrial sector. CGR thus benefits from technical expertise and know-how in the field of design and manufacturing of elastic links by springs.

International CGR, key figures :

  • • 19 production sites located in France, Spain, Germany, Poland, China, Brazil, Mexico, Romania and Hungary
  • • Revenue of 155 million euros, in constant increase
  • • 1400 people spread over 5 divisions

In particular, CGR International supported ICA’s activities by producing elastic variable stiffness bonds that could be integrated into non-linear vibration absorbers.

In 2018, ICA and CGR International decided to intensify their historic collaboration by founding the first joint research laboratory supported by INSA Toulouse: the Spring Technology Research Institute (STRAIN). The scientific committee of the STRAIN laboratory has identified a first priority target for work: the development of tools to assist in the manufacture of springs by integrating the fine characterisation of elastoplastic properties of metal wires, which is the subject of a thesis launched in May 2019.
