Abstract: The aim is to experimentally investigate the crack arrest capability under impact loading of structural materials. For that purpose, pre-notched plates are impacted on their edge by a cylindrical projectile and the progressive failure of the plate, involving adiabatic shear banding and/or crack propagation, is filmed by high-speed cameras. Frames are then post-processed using home-made or commercial DIC softwares. Experimental data are then compared with numerical results in view of discriminating numerical approaches dealing with high-strain rate failure.
